Preparing for Winter

If you own bee's there are two things you must do this year

Wrap your hives with insulation, or use an insulation board and feed your bee's with fondant if you have extracted honey and removed all your supers.

The rule of thumb is that a brood box needs 20 kg of honey to get through the winter months

I'm predicting that this year will be a severe winter, snow an the like, possibly like 1971 if your memory is good enough to remember that year.

So, by now you should have completed your extraction, as the Queen will have reduced her egg laying and the brood will be reducing for the winter.

By now, you should have made up fondant or bought supplies of it and have it ready for the winter months.

The Bee's will be under the most stress between January and February, when your colony may starve or die due to environmental pressures.

Love your bee's and they will love you back.

Remember, that we need bee's more than they need us.
